There is a new phone scam, whose aim is extortion. It works as follows:- The criminals pick your name out of the telephone directory, and ring you. They say that death threats have been made from this number, and the recipient is very concerned. The natural reaction is to try to persuade the person that he is mistaken. As
you try to explain your innocence, you provide details of your movements, circumstances, family etc. ie. “That can’t be from this number because no man lives here”. “I live alone with my children”. “I was out, I always go shopping on that day”.
The caller is very persistent.
A few days later, they called again to say: 'We have been watching you, we know exactly what times you come and go, we know who's in the house, how many children you have, and unless you want something to happen, you must pay xxx Euros.
This is what to do.
If you receive the first call, do not allow the offender to take over the conversation, interrupted his speech with firmness. Say that if he has received such a call, then he should report it to the police. Then hang up.
You should then report the matter yourself to the police.
